Military Academies
Many students are interested in attending a military service academy. There are five military academies in the United States.
United States Military Academy
United States Coast Guard Academy
United States Merchant Marine Academy
United Stated Air Force Academy
To be accepted into a military academy, you must meet eligibility requirements, meet physical requirements, and be nominated (with the exception of the Coast Guard Academy, which you can apply directly to). Your nomination can come from your U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, or the Vice President of the United States. Each of these individuals has a limited number of students they can nominate, so it is important that you have a competitive application and meet all application deadlines.
Nominations
Because the nomination process for a military service academy is very competitive and each nominator can only offer a limited number of slots, we strongly recommend that you seek all nominations that you are eligible for. Students typically apply Fall of their Senior year. Students who are not U.S. citizens must apply through the country which they have citizenship.
1. U.S. House of Representatives — Your congressional district
Westminster spans ZIP code 80030, which overlaps multiple districts, but students should determine their exact congressional district—typically either Colorado’s 7th or 8th District, depending on their specific address
- If you're in CO-07: Your Representative is Brittany Pettersen (D-CO-7). Students in her district may apply through her office for a service academy nomination: https://pettersen.house.gov/
- If you're in CO-08: Your Representative is Gabe Evans (R-CO-8) Students in her district may apply through his office for a service academy nomination: https://gabeevans.house.gov/
→ ** Next Steps**: Visit your Representative’s official website to learn about deadlines, application materials, and interview requirements.
2. U.S. Senate — Two statewide opportunities
All Colorado residents, including Westminster HS students, are eligible to apply for nominations through both U.S. Senators - check their websites for details on deadlines, process and application:
- Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO)

- Senator John Hickenlooper (D-CO) https://www.hickenlooper.senate.gov/academy-nominations
→ ** Pro Tip**: Apply to both Senators—and your House representative—to increase your nomination chances
3. Vice President of the United States — At-large nomination
Students may also pursue a nomination from the Vice President, available nationwide. Visit the White House website for complete details and deadlines: https://www.whitehouse.gov/service-academy-nomination/
